New Device Zaps Migraines (Health Scitech)

A magnetic pulse technique originally developed to treat psychological disorders like depression has been modified to zap away migraines before they can fully form.

In a recent study, researchers tested a device called a transcranial magnetic stimulator, or TMS for short, on a small group of 43 migraine sufferers.

The TMS generates a strong, one millisecond magnetic pulse that interrupts the symptoms leading up to a migraine, called the "aura" phase. Many migraine sufferers report zigzagging lines or bright flashes of light in their vision during this phase, as well as spreading blind spots and tingling sensations in their arms and legs.

Cleaner toilets, better manners?

The WTC is the educational arm of the Singapore-based World Toilet Organisation, which Sim said has members from 40 countries, and organises the World Toilet Summit, which will be held this year in Moscow in September.

"Japan is famous for its clean toilets and their culture demands clean toilets," Sim said.

Saiko Sakamoto, an expert on toilet aesthetics who is part of Katsumata's clean-up crew, said toilets reflect a person's grooming.

"If the toilets are clean, people's manners will improve," she said.

While some Singapore loos pass muster, other public washrooms "look very dirty", she said.

"In shopping centres and hotel toilets, the styling is very attractive," Sakamoto said.

Japan needed 15 years for its toilets to shine and Singapore's toilets will require five to seven years of work before reaching that standard, she said.

Katsumata, who has organised similar seminars in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia, urged toilet cleaners to uphold Singapore's squeaky-clean reputation.

"Tourists who visit Singapore have the impression that Singapore is very beautiful and clean, so don't disappoint them," he said through a translator.

Singapore imposes a fine of 30 Singapore dollars ($18) on those who fail to flush public toilets.

"We are a rich country and we have everything. Our image is that of a clean and green city. We can't have dirty toilets," Sim said.

I did not know that flushing is 'fine-driven' until today but I believe many shopping mall and restaurant toilets now have automatic flushes to keep the bowls clean.

Dirty seats seem to be a bigger problem, for ladies and poopoo-ing guys. That is why we need such signs, erm.. to be written correctly.

Chocolates

Have you eaten your easter chocolate eggs or chocolates from January this year?
No? Then you might wanna check before eating.

Recently 7 Cadbury chocolates types have been recalled in various countries, including Singapore, due to a salmonella contamination. They are:
250 gram bars of Dairy Milk Turkish,
Dairy Milk Caramel;
Dairy Milk Mint;
Dairy Milk 8 chunk;
1 kilogram bars of Dairy Milk:
Diary Milk Button Easter Eggs (105 grams);
and Cadbury Freddo 10p.

Selmonella traces in the chocolates are said to have come from a leaky pipe near the production line in Cadbury's factory.

If it happens that you have just popped some of that chocolate into your mouth before reading, don't panick too. It was mentioned that the amount of selmonella might be too little to affect human bodies. :D

Chocolate is known to be a source of antioxidants, good cholestrol and small amount of phenylethylamine, which elevates our mood. But do you know that chocolate saved a woman's life in Canada?

A woman whose car flipped into an icy river, is believed to be saved by a heart-shaped box of Valentine chocolates after being trapped in the freezing Kootenay River water for almost 2 hours. She found a floating plastic container of chocolates , a Valentine's Day gift from her family, and ate it.

The woman was rescued in time and sent to the hospital for treatment of hypothermia. Simon Grypma, Assistant Chief of Nelson Fire and Rescue, said that the chocolates had probably helped to keep her alive by providing a small amount of extra body heat. :)

More life with more cash after Pay Day!

I woke up this morning feeling surprisingly refreshed. Lucky that I did not stay up to watch the Portugal match, I thought to myself . Anyway, I heard that it was another kelong match. I opened my eyes before the alarm went off and had time to make myself some pancakes with clover honey for breakfast.

The office is rather quiet today, with BT having half day (i think) and ML working from home. Good thing, Boss and the woman are 'working from home' today too. Phew.

Slight Monday blues. But fret not, it's just another 5 more days to pay day! Have been waiting for it since a couple of weeks ago so that I can buy a pair of heels, 2 pairs of sandals. Need to do the purchases before GSS ends. :D

Tong Shui Cafe and Live World Cup matches



Visited the Tong Shui Cafe this weekend as they screened live world cup matches. I would say that they have a wide variety of desserts, drinks and food to choose from. Below are items on their menu that I have tasted, you might wanna try those marked with *:

Iced Cappucino with Coke*
Iced Milk Tea with Chin Chow*
Lychee Soda
Mango freeze with Strawberries
Fish Fillet with Sichuan Sauce Rice* (comes with salted egg, fried egg and veggies)

Their drinks are priced from $2.88 to $6.88. They have interesting toasts, snacks, noodles, cheesy pastas, macaroni soup, rice, sizzling hot plates.. and many more. Overall, I would rate it a good place to chill out for dinner or snacks, but only occasionally as I find that their prices are bit on the high side. (judging on the stuff they serve)

I think they have a few branches. I have included here the link (although it is not very useful), so that you can learn more. Go try it if you run out ideas on where to go this weekend. :)

Boring Friday

Woke up in the morning with sleepy head and sore throat. Was expecting a weekend mood but seems like my day has started dull.

However, glad to see no Old Phang Kee around from today onwards. Heard that he left a huge pile of stools behind for colleagues to clear. Sickening but I believe in Karma.

Feels good chatting up with a Poly-mate. My last conversation with him was in last December. How time flies, he's already counting down to his ORD date. So are Sean and his campmate, I believe.

No other special happenings which is noteworthy. Hope the weekend perks me up from the stagnant week.

At Last!

Finally, this is the day many of us have been looking forward to. Old Phang Kee's last day. Some nice guys giving him a farewell meal at KFC I heard. For me, another eat-in day. Sugar and raisins bread is in my lunchbox.

Just a couple of days ago, Old Phang Kee actually gave out free, in case some of you rubbing your eyes now, yes it's FREE snacks. I was telling one of my colleagues that we can buy 4D that day. Hehe, it might have striked since we are so 'lucky'.

So far this has been a 'jobless' day for me. I have been tidying up my url bookmarks the whole morning. Nothing much for now, will fill up if there's more later.

Had white wine with Bf after dinner on Friday. Though the day was no special occasion and there wasn't anything to celebrate, we opened one of our three stocked up bottle. It has been long since we last had wine. I thought we haven't drank wine this year.

Any good white wines to recommend anyone?

A poor experience

This 'tragedy' took place last Friday.

After work, me and my bf went to Seah Imm Food Centre for dinner. We walked around to source for food to our liking and finally settled for a bee hoon/fried rice stall.

Bf happily selected his choice of 'liao' and conveniently told me: "Hey you pay first k, i need to go draw money later."

"But I'm not sure if I have enough cash. What if I don't?" I said.

No significant response from him. I took out my wallet to check my cash. To my horror, I saw only $3plus in it. My reactions caught his attention and he gasped.

Trying to stay calm, I paid for his plate of fried rice and went on to check my shillings. Another $3 plus in my coin pouch. It was not enough for our drinks. Probably only cover what I am going to eat. Bf asked the stall lady for location of the nearest ATM.

"Oh, nearest is at Habourfront loh.." she exclaimed.

Bf decided to go to the car to dig for shillings. I sat down with the 2 plates of food, feeling quite pathetic. It was not long when he came back and in his hands, there were jingling coins. Slowly he laid the coins and began counting.











And I guess at a point of time, he was afraid that someone might jus rob us.














Nevertheless, we managed to buy a complete meal with all the shillings. We even shared an extra plate of carrot cake. Burp!

Moral of the story: Always make sure you have enough cash before ordering your food, especially when the nearest ATM is not near!

All happened to be 3 things.

Weekend flew past. I need to jot a number of things here and the number happens to be 3. Read through MLand and found a survey on 3 things. Yea, I should answer that. The other 2 things, or maybe more, will come in next post.

No Old Phang Kee, No snacks..

Why no Old Phang Kee? He's on sick leave. Think he burnt himself yesterday with the super-spicy-sardine puff. Make me think of him as one of the charcoal-like creatures in Silent Hill..

Intially thought that there was no snacks. Just saw our Snack Representative doing head counts and off to buy bread. Droolz..

Dead day, rotting best describes me now. At least I was spending my time away, doing up some customisation here. Perhaps dead day for me due to dead mood. (erm not Deadwood.) Disappointed with RY, all the shoutings but nothing seems to drill through her. The selfishness, stubborness, defensiveness from her.. leaving me lost. She behaved as if she was not part of us, yet she is. For that I know I cannot give her up. New strategies in my head.

Teh Tarik

Just saw an empty teh tarik satchet in the bin.

Remembered that the old funky china man helped himself so generously to special teh tarik which was meant for boss. Today, the special teh tarik has already been kept away by pantry auntie. What's left for old funky china man to indulge is the 'normal' milk tea.

In order not to miss out on free snacks, old funky china man turned from his seat and swept his eyes past the sandwich bar, right after it was placed. I could just imagine that grin on his face. Exacltyt he way he would show his teeth when he finds a good tenant.

According to his loud phone conversation, his room rent has increased from last week's $300 to $320 this week. That's good for him and what's good for us is that he's leaving soon.

A celebration is about to come. Our longed virus-free and milo stain free office is coming back.
